Mission Statement & Guiding Principles
Mission Statement
The Humanities Department of NCSSM is an inclusive learning community spanning World Languages, Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Ethnic and Cultural Studies, American Studies, Literary Studies, and History. Our mission is to provide a supportive and challenging environment that encourages curiosity grounded in critical thinking, ethics, self-reflection, creativity, and empathy.
Guiding Principles
Students are active participants in their learning and creative process.
Through scholarship and expression, we engage with each other, our fields of inquiry, and the wider world to better understand diverse lives, histories, and cultures.
Work in the Humanities challenges us to engage in productive discourse and move beyond our assumptions to adopt a broad-minded and empathetic approach to the complexities of being human.
Collaboration is our commitment to openness, inclusion, and mutual respect leading to individuals, communities, and disciplines working together in a supportive space.
To build community we listen closely, honor different experiences and values, respond honestly, and seek repair and reconciliation when relationships are fractured.
We make decisions rooted in equity, flexibility, and a focus on the whole person. We are committed to growth and fulfillment.
We value creativity. It allows us to make meaningful connections and enrich our communities.
Appropriate resources are essential to our work. We value the tools necessary for learning.
